Note cards
Science vocabulary words are known to many students as a foreign language. They are long, brutal, and sometimes hard to pronounce.
NOTE CARDS: Once idea is to have students construct their own note cards in class with the teacher as a guide.
The teacher can use the overhead projector to create their own "note card." This gives students something to reference while they are drawing and writing definitions on their own. It is recommended that students collaborate during this time to come up with one definition "in their own words!" so students can relate to it better.
FRONT of NOTE CARD:
vocabulary word and pronunciation
BACK of NOTE CARD:
definition and/or a picture helping them remember the significance of the word
A mnemonic device or "trigger word" to help them remember how to pronounce it (optional)
a "trigger word" that can be used as a hint to the definition (optional)
Picture flash cards -
Have students break down 1 section of a chapter. Each section generally has a sub heading with a paragraph or two underneath expanding on a new topic. Have students make 1 flash card for each sub heading. On one side instruct students to simply write the sub heading. On the reverse side have students summarize the information from the text IN THEIR OWN WORDS. Finally have students include a visual aid either from the notes or the text that will help them remember the concepts. This is another alternative for visual learners. Also students these days are getting worse and worse at using resources like their text book to solve a problem. This will give students text book reading skills, study skills, and a homemade resource they can use to study for a quiz or a midterm or final later in the year.
